Caldwell County WIC Office

Breastfeeding Support

My name is Jennifer Crisp and I have been the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for the Caldwell County WIC Office since 2009.  As the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, my role is to provide support to WIC moms who want to breastfeed.

Although breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your baby, some moms may have trouble starting out.  I had problems at first with latch and soreness, and there were times I felt like giving up, but I knew that breastfeeding my baby was the best thing I could do for him.  If it wasn't for the support of my family and friends, I would never have gotten through the first week of breastfeeding.  So, as a mother who breastfed for 14 months, I understand the ups and downs that breastfeeding may bring.  Because of my positive experience with breastfeeding my own child, I want to help support other moms so that they can be successful with breastfeeding too!

I've seen that mom's who participate in the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program usually end up breastfeeding longer because of the extra support.  During my experience with breastfeeding it would have been so reassuring to have somebody to ask questions to about the difficulties that I was experiencing.

Things that you might find me doing as the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor include:
  • Visiting new moms in the hospital
  • Making home visits to help with latch or positioning of the baby
  • Doing phone calls to follow-up with expecting moms and new moms
  • Weighing babies before and after feedings to determine how much they are eating
  • Breast pump loans
I am also available nights and weekends to answer any questions that you might have!

If you have been on the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program in Caldwell County we invite you to complete the Peer Counselor Feedback form to tell us about your experiences.
